Biography

Johan Elf is a Professor in Physical Biology at Uppsala University. He is a member of the Wallenberg Academy Scholars and serves on the university board and the Royal Academy of Sciences. His research is primarily funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation and the European Research Council. The focus of Elf's laboratory is to bridge the existing gaps between quantitative physical models and biological observations, working to identify and resolve inconsistencies in our current understanding of life at the molecular level. The Elf group has pioneered single molecule tracking methods utilizing fluorescence microscopy to observe living cells, and has developed new microfluidic techniques along with corresponding analysis software to control growth conditions for automation. They also design computational tools for stochastic reaction-diffusion simulations and study intracellular kinetics and mathematical modeling of intercellular physiology. Furthermore, Johan Elf founded Astrego, a Uppsala-based diagnostics company that develops rapid point-of-care tests for antibiotic susceptibility.
