Biography

Johan holds a PhD in Physical Resource Theory and conducts research on sustainability transformations. His work develops knowledge on society’s complex sustainability challenges, emphasizing methodological development for learning and systemic change based on backcasting. Johan's research is inter- and transdisciplinary, drawing knowledge from multiple fields in collaboration with societal actors. He has a special interest in education for sustainable development and was part of establishing the Challenge Lab at Chalmers in 2016, which received the UNEP/EAUC GUPES Green Gown Award. Currently, Johan participates in the Postdoc Academy for Transformational Leadership (2022-2024), an initiative of the Robert Bosch Foundation in collaboration with Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Leuphana University Lüneburg, Stockholm Resilience Centre, and the Dutch Research Institute for Transitions.
