Dr. Johan Knutsson

Biography

Johan Knutsson is a Professor Emeritus at Linköping University with a focus on the intersection of the museum world and academia, particularly concerning Arts & Crafts and the relationship between material, technique, form, and the history of furniture. For the past 16 years, he has researched how craftsmanship and innovative design add social responsibility and improve quality of life. His research emphasizes sustainability and the historical context in which materials and techniques are utilized. Knutsson believes that examining the past is crucial for analyzing the present and advancing into the future, especially in light of the increasing digitization of our world, which has led to a renewed interest in authentic, handcrafted items. His background involves significant public outreach and active roles in various museums, including presenting a doctoral thesis on traditional vernacular furniture at Stockholm University in 2001. After 2009, he held the Byggmästare John Mattson Chair in Furniture Culture at Malmstens Linköping University, aiming to enrich understanding of furniture culture throughout the Nordic Museum.
