Biography

Johan Schaffer is a professor at the School of Global Studies at the University of Gothenburg. He began his academic career as an associate professor in 2016 and has since made significant contributions to the field of international relations and human rights. Previously, he worked at the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights at the University of Oslo from 2009 to 2017 and held a visiting professorship at the Faculty of Law, University of Oslo, from 2018 to 2019. Schaffer has served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Nordic Journal of Human Rights and has taken on leadership roles in research and education, including acting as the Director of Doctoral Studies at the School of Global Studies. His research interests include legal mobilization, judicial politics, and human rights, with a focus on how civil society groups in the Nordic countries utilize courts to advocate for rights and effect social change. His recent projects include a major external funded research initiative exploring Indigenous land rights in Sápmi and several other significant research grants focused on judicial politics and civil society mobilization. He is actively involved in teaching and supervising doctoral research in areas pertinent to his expertise.
