Johan Vande Voorde obtained his PhD in the laboratory of Jan Balzarini at KU Leuven, Belgium, where he studied the impact of tumor-associated bacteria on chemotherapy. In 2015, he joined Eyal Gottlieb’s group at the Cancer Research UK Scotland Institute, formerly known as the CRUK Beatson Institute, where he studied metabolic vulnerabilities in colorectal cancer and the metabolic effects of Plasmax, a cell culture medium that closely mimics physiology. In 2018, he joined the team of Owen Sansom, director of the CRUK Scotland Institute, as part of the Cancer Grand Challenges Team Rosetta, a multidisciplinary consortium focused on applying metabolic profiling for colorectal cancer tissue stratification and target discovery. Johan established his independent research group at the University of Glasgow in 2024, funded by the CRUK Career Development Fellowship and the Lord Kelvin/Adam Smith Leadership Fellowship. His laboratory studies cancer metabolism and the role of the gut microbiome in cancer progression and therapy response, as well as the systemic consequences of cancer-related metabolic perturbations, such as muscle wasting.
