Biography

In November 2018, Johan Wolswinkel was appointed as a Full Professor of Administrative Law at Tilburg University. His chair focuses on analyzing and discussing the role of administrative law in relation to market-driven and data-driven approaches in public administration. He studied Law and Mathematics at VU University in Amsterdam, obtaining his PhD cum laude in 2013 for his doctoral thesis on competitive decision-making, specifically regarding the allocation of so-called 'limited-issued rights' such as licenses, concessions, contracts, and subsidies. Recently, in June 2023, he was awarded grants for research aimed at enhancing the impact of open government legislation and transparency in administrative single-case decision-making procedures, which includes a Vidi grant from the Dutch Research Council and an ICON grant from Tilburg University's Digital Sciences Society program. His core research themes have evolved from his doctoral work to encompass issues of transparency in new modes of administrative decision-making and the regulation of automated decision-making. He teaches courses at both the bachelor’s and master’s levels at Tilburg Law School, involving a collaborative approach with public and private partners in research.
