Biography

Dr. Johanna Beckmann is a Research Fellow at Monash University, focusing on the impact of climate change on polar regions and its implications for global climate patterns. She completed her Ph.D. at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research from 2014 to 2018, working under the supervision of Professors Rahmstorf and Ganopolski. Her research investigated the influence of Arctic climate change on atmospheric circulations and the mass loss of the Greenland ice sheet. She developed a numerical model to estimate the additional mass loss caused by submarine plume melting, a process that has been overlooked in ice sheet modeling. Following her Ph.D., Dr. Beckmann worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the ice dynamics group led by Professor Ricarda Winkelmann from 2019 to 2022, concentrating on the impacts of extreme melt events on the Greenland ice sheet. Currently, at Monash University, she is expanding her research interests to the effects of climate variability on the Antarctic ice sheet, collaborating with Felicity McCormack and Andrew Mackintosh using the ISSM model to examine the consequences of climate variability. Dr. Beckmann is also interested in supervising honours students who wish to investigate the impacts of southern ocean variability on Antarctic mass loss.
