Johanna Perez Gomez is a Fellow at the London School of Economics, specializing in anthropology, with a particular focus on ritual, sorcery, and religiosity in the context of irregular warfare in Latin America. She has conducted extensive ethnographic research in Colombian indigenous communities, aiming to shed light on how armed violence contributes to a nuanced understanding of heritage and cultural projects affected by conflict. With a Bachelor’s degree obtained in Colombia and a Master’s from Goldsmiths, she explored the experiences of Latin American activists in London and their impacts on political action. Her doctoral research, supported by the Economic and Social Research Council, centered on the ethnography of sorcery and paramilitary power, drawing on 14 months of fieldwork in Colombia. This research offers insights into the social, moral, and transcendental aspects of violence experiences. Currently, she also engages in postdoctoral studies in Mexico, investigating the creative resilience of communities in areas of intense armed conflict. Her teaching experience spans university-level courses on social anthropology and anthropological methods, as well as work in school settings. Key research interests include indoctrination, war trauma, and military cultures.
