Dr. Johanna Perheentupa

Biography

Johanna Perheentupa is a Lecturer at the University of New South Wales with a focus on Australian colonial and Indigenous histories. Her research emphasizes Indigenous rights and settler colonial engagement with Indigenous peoples. One of her notable publications is 'Redfern: Aboriginal Activism 1970s,' published by Aboriginal Studies Press, which examines the efforts of local Aboriginal organizations in pursuing self-determination across various fields such as law, health, the arts, culture, education, and housing. Johanna is actively involved in community-led projects, including an initiative aimed at documenting and publicizing the history of the Freedom Rides from the perspective of the Walgett Aboriginal Community. She engages with the local community to create a public art display commemorating the Freedom Rides and highlighting significant events related to Aboriginal protests against segregation in Walgett.
