Biography

Johanna Waters is a Professor of Human Geography and co-Director of the Migration Research Unit at University College London. She serves as the Director of the MSc in Global Migration and is the co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal Global Networks published by Wiley. Johanna completed her degree in Geography at Oxford between 1995 and 1998 at Jesus College and then moved to Vancouver, Canada, to pursue a two-year Master's program, followed by a PhD supervised by David Ley. Her research interests focus on transnational migration, particularly the educational roles in trans-Pacific mobilities. She began her academic career in 2004 at the University of Liverpool and later held positions at the Universities of Birmingham and Oxford before joining UCL as a Reader in 2018. Johanna has been involved with the Gender and Feminist Geographies Research Group at the Royal Geographical Society and is a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales. In her free time, she enjoys reading, orienteering in forests, and running, as well as spending time with her family.
