Biography

Professor Johanne Martel-Pelletier received her PhD in Physiology in 1979 from the University of Montreal. She completed a research fellowship in the Department of Rheumatology at the University of Miami in 1981. In 1981, she was appointed Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Montreal, promoted to Associate Professor in 1989, and then to Full Professor in 1995. She co-founded the Osteoarthritis Research Unit at the University of Montreal Hospital Centre in 1981 and has been the director of the Chair in Osteoarthritis since 2000. Professor Martel-Pelletier serves on the editorial boards of various scientific journals and has published over 450 articles and contributed to numerous international conferences. Her work focuses on the understanding of the mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis, including the study of tissue catabolism, repair, and the development of new therapeutic strategies. She has developed imaging technologies for non-invasive quantification of joint tissues in osteoarthritis patients and conducted extensive epidemiological studies.
