Johannes Buchner investigates the principles of protein structure formation and the cellular machinery involved in protein folding, which allows cells to survive adverse environmental conditions such as high temperatures. His studies not only provide insight into fundamental cellular processes but also establish important prerequisites for the production of proteins in biotechnological processes, including the biosynthesis of antibodies. Buchner completed his studies in biology at the University of Regensburg and earned his doctorate in 1991. After serving as a postdoctoral researcher at the National Cancer Institute of the NIH under Ira Pastan, he returned to the University of Regensburg to head a junior research group. He habilitated in biochemistry in 1995 and was appointed a full professor at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in 1998. He is the co-organizer and co-spokesperson of the Center for Integrated Protein Science Munich (CIPSM) and has led the SFB 1035 on conformational regulation of proteins since 2012.
