Biography

Prof. Johannes F. de Boer graduated from the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands in 1995, earning a Ph.D. in experimental physics. In 1997, he moved to the Beckman Laser Institute at the University of California, Irvine, where he became an Assistant Professor in 1998. He then joined the Wellman Laboratories of Photomedicine at Harvard Medical School in 2001, quickly advancing to Associate Professor by 2005. After over a decade in the United States, he returned to the Netherlands in 2008, taking a full professor position in the Physics Department at VU University Amsterdam, where he heads the section on Biophotonics and Medical Imaging. He also served as the director of LaserLaB Amsterdam from 2010 to 2016. In 2022, Prof. de Boer was appointed head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at VU for three years. His research is interdisciplinary, focusing on the development of new optical diagnostic technologies and their translation into clinical applications. A recognized leader in biophotonics, he pioneered Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and has made significant contributions to its clinical application and the enhancement of imaging technologies.
