Biography

Professor Knolle’s area of expertise is condensed matter systems and the regimes and laws of quantum mechanics. In condensed matter physics, complex behavior arises from the interaction of basic degrees of freedom. His research aims to uncover the richness of fascinating behavior and to understand the universal principles that organize the physical world. Knolle’s focus is on searching for unconventional quantum phases in correlated materials, leading to a deeper understanding of the fundamental principles that drive these phases, with practical relevance for future quantum technology. He studied Physics at the Technical University of Dresden and Boston University, completing his PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Physics of Complex Systems in 2014. After a postdoctoral position at the University of Cambridge, he joined Imperial College London as a Lecturer in 2017 and was appointed to an Associate Professorship at TUM in 2019.
