Dr. Johannes Wallmann

Biography

Johannes Wallmann is a distinguished pianist, composer, and recording artist serving as the Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Mead Witter School of Music. A graduate of Berklee College of Music (B.M., 1995) and New York University (M.A., 1997; Ph.D., 2010), Wallmann has been awarded numerous scholarships and grants throughout his career, including national competition wins and Canada Council artist grants. He has taught at prestigious institutions such as New York University and California State University, East Bay, before becoming a faculty member at UW-Madison in 2012. He has led the development of the jazz studies program at UW and has received notable accolades, including the Emily Mead Baldwin award. Wallmann is an accomplished performer, having toured extensively across North America, Europe, and Asia, and has released ten critically acclaimed albums as a leader throughout his career. His work often integrates various musical styles and social themes, notably honoring marriage equality and cultural acceptance through his musical storytelling.
