Biography

Johannes Weickenmeier is an Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering Science at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of St. Cross College. He obtained his PhD from ETH Zurich in 2015 and has training as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Stanford University. Prior to his current role, he served as an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology from 2018 to 2024. His research aims to elucidate damage mechanisms associated with healthy aging and neurodegenerative diseases, facilitating early diagnosis of abnormal brain changes. Johannes is a founding member of the Center for Neuromechanics at Stevens and has held the position of Director from 2022 to 2024. His work has received recognition, including the National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2024 and the Employee Recognition Award for Student-Centricity in 2022. He leads efforts in Brain Health with a focus on experimental characterization of brain tissues and computational modeling of multiphysics behaviors in living systems. His interests encompass Experimental Continuum Mechanics, Soft Materials, and Computational Multiscale Modeling.
