Dr. John David Dewsbury

Biography

JD Dewsbury is a Professor in Human Geography at the School of Science at UNSW Canberra. His research focuses on performative and non-representational aspects of social life, particularly concerning views of space, environment, affects, human behavior, and subjectivity. Utilizing post-continental philosophy, Dewsbury seeks to understand the relationships involving habit, agency, and technology as well as politics and identity. His work has led to successful collaborations across disciplines such as performance studies, political theory, sociology, and environmental studies. Currently, he leads research in Cultural Environmental Geography at UNSW Canberra, developing interdisciplinary research within Behavioral Science, specifically focusing on Australia's policies and defense emergency service infrastructures. His work has been published in reputable journals such as Environment & Planning D, Cultural Geographies, and Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers. Dewsbury's academic contributions push the agenda of philosophy within the social sciences, with a recent book published on Guattari and the politics of ecology. He has supervised numerous PhD theses, broadening the reach of critical research in geography.
