Biography

John Albertson is a Professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University. He joined the Cornell faculty in July 2015, having previously been the department chair at Duke University. Albertson completed his undergraduate studies in Civil Engineering at SUNY Buffalo, graduating in 1985, and practiced as a professional structural engineer for six years in the electric power industry. He later earned an MBA in Finance from the University of Hartford. After returning to academia, he obtained a Master’s degree in Hydrology from Yale University in 1993 and a Ph.D. in Hydrologic Science from the University of California, Davis in 1996. Albertson began his academic career in the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia before moving to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Duke University in 2002. His research interests encompass the development of a comprehensive understanding of exchange rates of mass, energy, and momentum between land and atmosphere, with primary applications in hydrometeorology and air quality. Albertson is also involved in teaching upper-level courses in Hydrology and is currently developing a new course on Engineering Smart Cities.
