Dr. John Archibald

Biography

John Archibald is a distinguished professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Dalhousie University. He focuses on genome evolution, gene transfer, and endosymbiosis involving prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms, utilizing molecular biological computational methods. His research aims to understand the pivotal molecular biochemical events that shaped the evolution of eukaryotes, as well as the evolutionary relationships among eukaryotic microbes. Current interests also include studying the implications of lateral gene transfer on maize nuclear genomes and the evolution of photosynthetic organelles like chloroplasts. Archibald has held several academic positions including Director of the Institute for Comparative Genomics at Dalhousie University and has contributed to numerous high-impact publications in the field. He is also known for leading a research group at his lab and mentoring graduate and postdoctoral researchers. His continued work in the field is instrumental in advancing the understanding of complex life forms and their genomes.
