Biography

Emeritus Professor John Arnold completed his Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering with first class honours at the University of Melbourne in 1975 and later obtained a research Master of Engineering Science degree in computer control in 1977. He began his academic career in 1978 when he joined the University of New South Wales as a Teaching Fellow in the Faculty of Military Studies. He successfully completed his PhD in 1983 and rose through the ranks to become a Professor of Electrical Engineering, later taking on the role of Head of the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. Professor Arnold's research focuses on image and video compression and he has been a major contributor to the development of international standards for digital television as part of the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). He has taught a variety of courses related to digital systems, communications, and video compression throughout his career, also presenting numerous short courses for technical staff in the television industry.
