Dr. John Arroyo

Biography

John C. Arroyo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the University of California San Diego. He has previously held appointments as an Assistant Professor at the University of Oregon and has contributed significantly to the field of urban planning and policy. Arroyo received his doctorate in Urban Planning, Policy, Design from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is recognized as a national expert on the social, political, and cultural dimensions of immigrant-centered built environments. His research addresses topics such as urban design practices for emerging newcomer gateways, arts, and cultural planning. Arroyo's scholarly work has been published in various respected journals including the Journal of the American Planning Association and Urban Affairs Review. He has raised over $5 million in competitive grants and held prestigious fellowships from organizations such as the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities. His commitment to social justice and equity stems from his background as the son of Mexican immigrants, and he has worked extensively in urbanism-related nonprofits and governmental agencies across the United States, Europe, and Latin America.
