Biography

Dr. John Beard’s work considers health from a perspective of functioning rather than the mere presence or absence of disease. Before joining the Columbia Aging Center, he served as Director of the Ageing and Life Course program at the World Health Organization (WHO), where he led the development of a global public health framework for healthy aging. This framework emphasizes the intrinsic capacity of older individuals, highlighting the combination of physical and mental capabilities essential for aging well. Dr. Beard's research utilizes large longitudinal studies from North America, Europe, Israel, and China to advance the measurement of intrinsic capacity and examine its variations across populations. His recent analyses indicate that recently-born generations in England and China are experiencing healthier aging trajectories than previous cohorts. His focus remains on understanding the drives and patterns of these trends in the United States and elsewhere. Dr. Beard continues to influence global policy on critical issues such as community development to support older adults in low- and middle-income countries, creating age-friendly environments, designing integrated healthcare for older populations, and supporting older individuals displaced by conflict and disaster.
