John Beckworth has taught oil and gas law and contracts for the past seven years after serving as associate dean at Texas Law from 2013 to 2018. He co-founded and practiced at his own law firm in Houston, focusing on civil jury cases and appeals in state and federal courts with a specialization in oil, gas, and energy law. After completing his legal education in 1983, Mr. Beckworth joined Fulbright & Jaworski, LLP in Houston as an associate partner in the firm’s litigation section. In 1994, he co-founded his own law firm, Watt Beckworth. He is an associate member of the American Board of Trial Advocates and is Board Certified in Oil, Gas, and Mineral Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Mr. Beckworth is a 2024 recipient of the Ernest E. Smith Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Texas Journal of Oil, Gas & Energy Law, and he will be recognized in the 2026 edition of Lawyers of America for his work in oil and gas law. He serves as a trustee emeritus of the University of Texas Law School Foundation and is currently a trustee of the LBJ Foundation, as well as a member of the Federal Judicial Evaluation Committee.
