John Bird is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Simon Fraser University. A member of the Peguis Nation, he was born and raised in Treaty 1 territory, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. He began his PhD in History at the University of Saskatchewan in 2017, where his dissertation explored the connections between Indigenous history and the visions of the Anishinaabe peoples for their future. Bird has also spent a year at Yale University as a Henry Roe Cloud Fellow from 2021-2022. His research projects include engaging with the Stó:lō Research Resource Management Centre and other community-focused initiatives. Following the completion of his PhD in 2023, Bird was awarded a Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship to conduct research at the University of Oxford on Anishinaabeg journeys to the British Isles from 1759 to present. His work amplifies Indigenous voices, focusing on historical scholarship and activism among Anishinaabe writers. His publications include articles on Indigenous survival and the historical contributions of George Copway. Bird is actively involved in graduate supervision related to Indigenous history and community-engaged research.
