Professor John Borrows, OC, FRSC, is the inaugural Loveland Chair in Indigenous Law and is recognized as one of the world’s leading scholars in Indigenous law. As an Anishinaabe/Ojibway member of the Chippewas of Nawash Nation in Ontario, Borrows imparts courses to first-year law students that explore the intersection of Indigenous Peoples’ laws and Canada’s legal framework. Over the past decade, he has taught an intensive course in Anishinaabe law, allowing students to engage directly with Elders, Chiefs, and colleagues in the Indigenous law context. His research is centered on the revitalization of Indigenous Peoples’ laws in relation to Canadian law, adopting a comparative perspective that encompasses Canada, the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand. His teaching also includes Canadian and U.S. constitutional law, as well as Canadian Aboriginal rights law and environmental law.
