Dr. John Boyages

Biography

John Boyages is a cancer specialist with over 35 years of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. He is a Professor of Breast Oncology at Macquarie University in Sydney and serves as the Director of the Australian Lymphoedema Education Research and Treatment (ALERT) centre at the university. John has contributed significantly to the field through his regular media commentary as a spokesperson for the McGrath Breast Foundation. After graduating from the University of Sydney, he trained at Westmead Hospital and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute at Harvard University in Boston. He was instrumental in establishing the breast cancer screening program at Westmead, which is Australia's largest clinical diagnostic breast centre. Since his appointment at Macquarie University in 2011, he has led efforts to develop clinical and research programs aimed at patient support in cancer care. As a lateral thinker, John enjoys integrating technology into his work and frequently lectures on clinical leadership. He is also an accomplished author, having written the book “Taking Control” and recently published on topics such as Male Breast Cancer. John has published more than 150 research papers and provides consultations to patients across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. He is a regular participant in public medical forums, sharing his knowledge with healthcare professionals, patients, and their families. In recognition of his dedication to the field, he was awarded the Order of Australia in the 2017 Australia Day Queen’s Honours List.
