Biography

John W. Boyer is the Martin Ryerson Distinguished Service Professor of History at the University of Chicago, where he focuses on the history of modern Europe, particularly Central Europe from 1700. His special teaching interests include German history from 1740 to 1918 and the history of the Habsburg Empire from 1648 to 1918, as well as religion and politics in modern European history. In recent years, Professor Boyer has worked on the history of universities in relation to the Habsburg Empire and Republican Austria. He has published numerous works, including "The University of Chicago: History" (University of Chicago Press, 2015) and has completed a volume on Austria from 1867 to 1955 for the Oxford History of Modern Europe series, published in late 2022. His ongoing research includes the history of religion and politics in modern European history (1789-1960) and various essays and books that reflect his expertise in these areas.
