John Carroll is a Professor and Dean of the Sub Faculty of Biomedical Sciences at Monash University. His research focuses on understanding the mechanisms of oocyte development, maturation, and fertilization in mammals. Carroll’s work addresses critical issues related to oocyte quality, which is often responsible for high rates of infertility and miscarriage in the population. A significant aspect of his studies is the investigation of meiotic cell divisions and the rate of chromosome abnormalities in women aged late 30s to early 40s, which greatly affect oocyte quality. He highlights the role of mitochondria in generating ATP as a major factor influencing oocyte quality. Additionally, he is involved in studying mitochondrial dynamics and function in oocytes with the aim of modulating mitochondrial activity to improve oocyte quality. Carroll has a robust history of collaboration with Monash IVF to translate his findings into clinical practice. His research has been supported by long-term funding from the Medical Research Council and the Australian Research Council, with results published in top scientific journals including Nature, Cell Biology, Science, and Developmental Cell. He completed his PhD at the University of Adelaide in 1991 and later held significant academic positions at University College London before joining Monash University in September 2012.
