Biography

John Carruthers is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in Regional Science at Cornell University. His current research focuses on evaluating environmental remediation projects in the Puget Sound region of Washington State and assessing the value of public education amenities in the Seoul Metropolitan Area. Prior to joining Cornell, Carruthers was the founding director of the Sustainable Urban Planning Program at George Washington University, where he led the program to achieve accreditation. He has received multiple awards for his contributions to planning education, including the Distinguished Leadership Award from the National Capital Area Chapter of the American Planning Association in 2016 and the George Washington Award in 2019, which is GW’s highest academic honor. Carruthers has served on the North American Regional Science Council and the Council of the Regional Science Association International and is a board member of the Western Regional Science Association. His research has been published in prominent journals such as Environment and Planning B, the International Regional Science Review, the Journal of Economic Geography, and the Journal of Regional Science.
