Biography

John Cartwright is an Emeritus Professor of Contract Law and an Emeritus Student (Fellow) at Christ Church, Oxford. He served as a Fellow Tutor in Law at Christ Church from 1982 to 2018 and as a Professor of Contract Law at the University from 2008 to 2018. Prior to these positions, Cartwright was a Lecturer in Law (1982-2004) and a Reader in Contract Law (2004-2008). He practiced as a solicitor (non-practising) and held the position of Professor of Anglo-American Private Law at the University of Leiden from 2007 to 2017. Furthermore, Cartwright has taught at Université Paris Panthéon-Assas (formerly Université Paris II) as a visiting professor from 2002 to 2024, receiving the title 'professeur contractuel de droit privé: droit du common law' in 2019. In 2025, he will be awarded the title of Docteur Honoris Causa by Paris Panthéon-Assas. His research interests lie primarily in English comparative private law, with a focus on contract and land law. From 2015 to 2018, he served as the Director of the Oxford Law Faculty's Institute of European and Comparative Law, where he continues to be a Research Fellow.
