Biography

John Chalcraft graduated with starred honors in History (M.A. Hons) from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge in 1992. He pursued post-graduate work at Harvard, Oxford, and New York University and received his doctorate with distinction in Modern History of the Middle East in January 2001. He held a Research Fellowship at Caius College from 1999 to 2000. Chalcraft served as a Lecturer in Modern Middle Eastern History in the Department of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Edinburgh from 2000 to 2005. He is currently a Professor of Politics in the Department of Government at the London School of Economics (LSE). His teaching includes courses like GV248: Power Politics in the Modern World: Comparative Perspectives, GV4F2: Popular Politics in the Middle East, and GV4G5: History and Politics in the Modern Middle East.
