Dr. John Cherry

Biography

John F. Cherry is the Joukowsky Family Professor Emeritus of Archaeology and Classics at Brown University. He has a diverse academic background with extensive training in Classics, Archaeology, and Anthropology, having conducted archaeological fieldwork across Great Britain, the United States, Greece, Italy, and Armenia, among other places. After starting his career in the late 1970s at the University of Sheffield and later serving as a lecturer at the University of Cambridge, he joined the University of Michigan in 1993 where he became a Professor of Classical Archaeology. He was the Director of the Interdepartmental Program in Classical Art and Archaeology and Curator at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. In 2006, he became a part of Brown University where he continues to contribute to the fields of archaeology and classics. His current research focuses on Aegean Prehistory and includes the co-direction of a diachronic field survey project in Montserrat, Caribbean. Cherry’s scholarly output includes significant journal articles and book chapters, and he has held editorial roles in various academic publications. He also emphasizes the importance of ethical professional practices in archaeology and is deeply committed to educating his students about historical and theoretical issues within the discipline.
