John Clarke graduated from Queen's University, Belfast in 1965 and obtained an M.A. in historical geography from the University of Manitoba in 1966. He completed his doctorate, followed by a post-doctoral year at the University of Western Ontario, between 1966 and 1970. Clarke joined Carleton University in 1971, where he has been teaching courses in historical geography.
