Biography

Professor John R. Clarke received his Ph.D. from Yale University. He began teaching at the University of Texas at Austin in 1980, focusing on ancient Roman art, art-historical methodology, and contemporary art. Clarke has authored seven books, 78 essays, articles, and reviews. His notable works include 'Roman Black-and-White Figural Mosaics' (1979), 'Houses of Roman Italy, 100 B.C.-A.D. 250: Ritual, Space, Decoration' (1991), and 'Looking Lovemaking: Constructions of Sexuality in Roman Art, 100 B.C.-A.D. 250' (1998), which studies erotic art to reveal ancient Roman attitudes toward love, gender, and race. His recent research includes the co-direction of the Oplontis Project, which aims to provide a comprehensive publication of a luxury villa (50 B.C.-A.D. 79) with research findings accessible through a 3D digital model. Clarke has served on the Board of Directors for the College Art Association and the American Council of Learned Societies, including a term as Vice-Chair.
