Biography

Professor John Close completed his PhD in Physics at the University of California, Berkeley in 1991. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Washington, Seattle from 1991 to 1994, and was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow and Max Planck Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Fluid Dynamics in Göttingen from 1994 to 1998. Upon returning to Australia, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Fellowship in 2000 and promoted to Professor in 2008, receiving a national teaching award from the Carrick Foundation that same year. John has served as Associate Director of Education and currently holds the position of Associate Director of Research at the Research School of Physics at ANU. Close's research interests span five fields: cryogenics, atomic and molecular beams, metal clusters, Bose-Einstein condensation, and quantum sensors, with a focus on realizing ultra-stable primary sensors. He collaborates with biologists to explore the thermal properties of leaves, contributing to influential papers in the field. His qualifications include a BSc, MA, and PhD, underlining his extensive academic background in Physics.
