Biography

John H. Coatsworth is a leading scholar in Latin American economic international history. He served as Dean of the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University for four years and was named Provost of Columbia University in 2012. Prior to this, he was the Monroe Gutman Professor of Latin American Affairs at Harvard University from 1992 to 2007, where he was also the founding director of Harvard's David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies and chaired the Harvard University Committee on Human Rights Studies. Coatsworth was a member of the faculty at the University of Chicago from 1969 to 1992. His academic roles have included visiting professorships at various institutions in Mexico and Spain. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has served on the boards of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Tinker Foundation, among others. His editorial contributions span journals in various fields, and he has received numerous awards, including the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in 1986. Coatsworth has authored and edited eight books focusing on the comparative economic, social, and international history of Latin America, particularly Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.
