Biography

John Cox is a Lecturer in Urban Studies and Social Policy at the University of Glasgow. He serves as the Undergraduate Programme Director for Urban Studies & Social Policy within the School of Social & Political Sciences. John's doctoral research, entitled 'Defining Urban Character: Influence on Physical Outcomes in Cities', explored the interplay between tangible and intangible components of urban character and how they result in architectural outcomes that shape the unique ambiance and spirit of places. His research also examined the factors impacting urban character, including globalized attitudes towards place, architectural production by multinational corporations, and the constraints that influence the role of urban character in built environment processes. In addition to his academic role, John has experience working in media relations within the NGO and charity sectors and has practiced urban design. He is interested in supervising PhD projects related to globalization, built environments, and the importance of 'uniqueness' in placemaking and urban identity.
