Biography

John Craig is a Professor in the Department of History at Simon Fraser University, where he has served since September 1994. He completed his BA Hons in 1986 and MA in 1988 at Carleton University, followed by a Doctorate from the University of Cambridge in 1992 under the supervision of Patrick Collinson. His academic career includes a research fellowship at Robinson College, Cambridge, from 1992 to 1994 before his appointment at SFU. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1999 and became a Professor in 2005, also serving as Chair of the Department of History from 2005 to 2008. His research interests focus on early modern English social and cultural history, specifically the politics of reading in English parishes between 1536 and 1642. Craig is exploring the significance of book ownership and literacy in the period, particularly within parish communities leading up to the English Civil War. His work includes examining the soundscapes of worship and cultural politics of prayer in early modern England. He has published extensively in his field, contributing to numerous books and articles on topics such as the English Reformation and puritanism.
