I received extensive training in protein biochemistry while studying protein phosphatases and toxins that inhibit them at the University of Alberta. Interactions among the Protein Structure and Function Group exposed me to the field of contractile proteins in muscle. As a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University, I studied the cytoskeletal protein actin while working with molecular motors. My research at the University of Guelph focuses on understanding actin structure and function and elucidating the biochemical links between mutations in actin and cardiac disease development. I have also received several teaching awards, including the John Bell Award and the 3M National Teaching Fellowship. My research in education emphasizes best practices for utilizing learning outcomes in courses and how they can be measured to improve educational programs. I am a member of the Canadian Society for Molecular Biosciences and the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.
