Biography

John Dear is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London, with over 35 years of experience in the field. He has worked extensively in the Mechanics Materials Division, contributing to research on structural integrity, materials manufacturing, and micro-structural effects. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2023. Prior to joining Imperial in 1988, he served as a SERC Research Fellow at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge. John has successfully secured research funding from various UK Government bodies, the European Commission, and multiple overseas companies. He has published over 400 journal and conference papers, contributed to 18 books, and supervised 66 PhD students and 22 research assistants. His research interests include impact performance of aerospace and automotive components, blast performance of laminated glass facades and composite structures, and the properties of polymers and composites in high-strain rate conditions. He is currently Head of the Composites, Adhesives and Soft Solids Research Group at Imperial College.
