Biography

John Noël Dillon is a classical philologist and Roman historian, who received his PhD in Classics from Yale University in 2008. He has extensive experience in the administration of the Roman Empire and Roman law, with special interests including textual criticism, Roman Republican religion, Roman numismatics, and Greek literature from the Imperial period to medieval and early modern Latin literature and culture. He has taught at the University of Heidelberg, the University of Exeter, and Peking University, and has worked as a scholarly translator, translating numerous works primarily from German, French, and Italian into English. In 2017, he joined the faculty of Yale Divinity School as a Lecturer in Latin and also teaches at the Yale Department of Classics as a Senior Lector. Dillon has published several notable works including 'Justice Constantine: Law, Communication, Control' and translations of significant legal texts such as the 'Code of Justinian'. His recent projects include translations of works by Markus Friedrich and Hans-Ulrich Wiemer, and he is currently producing a new English translation of the Theodosian Code for Cambridge University Press.
