Dr. John Duncan

Biography

John Duncan is a scholar at the University of Western Australia specializing in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), spatial data analysis, and geospatial machine learning. His research involves developing tools and techniques for mapping land cover and land use features on the Earth’s surface. He focuses on understanding the drivers and consequences of changes in built, natural, and agricultural environments, with a particular interest in Australian agricultural and urban landscapes. John has collaborated extensively with government, not-for-profit, and private sectors on various international rural development projects. He has considerable experience working in Australia, South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Pacific Island Countries. In addition to his research, he develops and delivers training in GIS and geospatial data analysis for diverse audiences, including university students and government officials. He coordinates and teaches courses such as Advanced Spatial Analysis and Decisions Data Agriculture at the undergraduate level and includes geospatial machine learning in his Master’s level course on Environmental Science.
