Dr. John Encandela

Biography

John Encandela is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine. His career is focused on organizing and delivering health-related services to vulnerable populations and training health professionals. He holds a PhD in Sociology of Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania, where he completed his degree in 1994, and has extensive experience in national and international evaluations of HIV/AIDS programs and mental health services. At Yale, he serves as the Executive Director of the Evaluation & Assessment Center in Medical Education. His expertise includes evaluating health professional education curricula, training faculty and staff in feedback methods, and improving educational assessment systems. He plays a significant role in curriculum development and evaluation for the Masters Health Science/Medical Education program, and he chairs the Learning Environment Subcommittee for the Education Policy Curriculum Committee. Encandela integrates LGBTQI health topics into the curriculum and serves on the Dean's Council for LGBTQI Affairs. He is also involved in gathering and analyzing qualitative data for internal reviews of graduate medical education programs within the Psychiatry department.
