John Finlay graduated with an LLB (Hons) from the University of Edinburgh in 1993, where he was the winner of the Lord Cooper Memorial Prize for Distinguished LLB (Honours) graduates. He tutored at Edinburgh from 1993 to 1998 and was a lecturer in law during the 1995-1996 academic year. He completed his PhD in legal history in 1997 and was the joint winner of the Jeremiah Dalziel Prize for British History that year. John moved to Glasgow in 1998 as a lecturer in law and was promoted to senior lecturer in 2013, eventually attaining a personal chair in Scots law. From 2006 to 2012, he served as the Chief Adviser of Studies in Law and acted as Deputy Chief Adviser from 2012 to 2015. He was the Undergraduate Director from 2016 to 2022 and was appointed the Student Mobility Officer in 2013. Currently, he also chairs the Translation Grades Subcommittee. John is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a member of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. Between 1997 and 2005, he served as the honorary publication secretary for the Scottish Legal History Society and has been involved in several international research collaborations funded by organizations such as the Gerda Henkel Stiftung and the Rheinisches Institut für Notarrecht. He has published extensively in the area of legal history, focusing on the development of the legal profession in Scotland and the history of legal practice in local courts and the Court of Session.
