Biography

John G. Flanagan is a Professor of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of California, Berkeley. He graduated with a degree in Optometry Vision Sciences from Aston University in Birmingham, UK in 1980 and received his PhD in 1985. Flanagan previously served as a Professor at the School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of Waterloo and as a Director of the Glaucoma Research Unit at the Toronto Western Research Institute. Throughout his career, he has been awarded continuous federal research funding for over 34 years and has supervised 46 graduate students while authoring 180 peer-reviewed publications along with 14 book chapters and 3 books. His research interests lie in the area of glaucoma, focusing on the basic mechanisms of the disease, including glial cell activation and neuroprotection, as well as ocular imaging and clinical psychophysics. Flanagan's contributions to the field have been recognized with numerous awards, such as the Certificate of Merit for Research Excellence from the Glaucoma Research Society of Canada and the Glenn Fry Award from the American Academy of Optometry. He is also a founding member of the Optometric Glaucoma Society and has served in numerous leadership roles within academic and professional associations.
