Biography

John Fremgen is an Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at the Butler School of Music, University of Texas at Austin. He is also the Director of the Alternative Improvisation Music Ensemble. Originally from the Chicago area, he studied classical bass under Harold Siegel before earning a Bachelor of Music in Commercial Music from Millikin University and a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of Southern California, where he was mentored by notable musicians such as Brian Bromberg and Shelly Berg. He has performed with a diverse array of artists across the United States and internationally, including renowned jazz musicians and pop/rock artists. In addition to performance, John has extensive teaching experience, having conducted masterclasses and performances at prestigious institutions and festivals around the world, including the North Sea Jazz Festival and the Montreux Jazz Festival. His work as a bassist has contributed to numerous recordings in various genres, including contributions to television shows and movies. His performance style is characterized by a strong connection to both jazz and contemporary music traditions.
