John Geibel is the Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Yale School of Medicine and the Director of Surgical Research. His early research training was conducted in Innsbruck, Austria, where he worked in the Physiology Department, investigating renal physiology using an isolated perfused tubule model. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physiology, an MD, and DSc degree, as well as a Master of Science and a Master of Arts degree. After obtaining his Dozent in Medicine from the University of Innsbruck, he joined Yale University as a visiting fellow and became a faculty member in Surgery and Cellular Molecular Physiology. Geibel's active research interests are centered on the role of the Calcium Sensing Receptor (CaSR) in gastrointestinal physiology and pathophysiology. His team has identified four new transport pathways in the stomach that play crucial roles in acid secretion and contribute to hypersecretion in patients. He maintains a research program focused on the functional role of the H-ATPase in the proximal tubule and continues to explore the impact of CaSR on various gastrointestinal conditions and treatments, including innovative approaches using 3D Bioprinting techniques for intestinal repair and modulation of acid secretion. He is the author of over 250 publications and holds 10 patents pertaining to gastrointestinal models and therapies.
