Dr. John Gilmore

Biography

John T. Gilmore is a Professor at the University of Warwick in the Department of English. He has a rich educational background, having received his BA, MA, and PhD from Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. With over a decade of experience in academia, he has been a key figure in British Caribbean literature studies, focusing on the long eighteenth century, translation history, and the issues surrounding the reception of classical literature, particularly in relation to race and gender. His research delves into the roles of cultural capital and the translation of Latin verse, aiming to introduce non-European literatures to European audiences. Gilmore has worked extensively in Barbados, including fourteen years at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies before joining Warwick in 1996. His publication record includes several notable contributions to books and articles on Caribbean literature, satire, and translations from Latin. He is also co-editor of important works such as the Oxford Companion to Black British History. His teaching focuses on Eighteenth-Century Literature and the intersection of Literature and Empire, particularly the influence of Britain and the Caribbean during the c. 1900 period.
