Biography

John Granzow specializes in the design and fabrication of new musical interfaces and instruments, bridging the fields of music, engineering, and interactive media. His research explores new performance systems, embedded electronics for sound synthesis, spatial audio, and applications of digital fabrication in instrument prototyping design. His work frequently crosses disciplinary boundaries, resulting in collaborations with composers, performers, and engineers. At the University of Michigan, he teaches courses in instrument design, sound synthesis, physical computing, and creative applications of technology in the performing arts. Granzow is actively mentoring students on research projects and fostering interdisciplinary partnerships on campus in his role as Faculty Director of ArtsEngine. He has presented instruments and sound installations internationally, and his work has been supported by organizations such as the National Endowment for the Arts, the Humanities Collaboratory, and the Michigan Arts Initiative Canada Council for the Arts. Granzow holds a Ph.D. in Computer-Based Music Theory and Acoustics from Stanford University.
