Professor Dr. John Howarter

Biography

John Howarter is an Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Engineering at Purdue University, where he leads a research group focused on surface interfacial phenomena in soft materials. His current research involves investigating new synthesis and processing methods to improve the performance of desalination membranes. Current projects include the design of functional polymer-clay nanocomposites, measurement and characterization of polymer degradation mechanisms in aqueous environments, and the development of polymer coatings with selective ion transport properties. His contributions to the field are underscored by a series of selected publications that explore the roles of structure-property relationships in nanocomposites and degradation kinetics. In addition to his research contributions, he has been recognized for his excellence in teaching and mentorship, receiving several awards including the College of Engineering Outstanding Faculty Mentor and Teacher awards for his work in mentoring future engineers and enhancing student learning.
